Data Analyst Roles And Responsibilities

Improve accountability with David Bowman’s information management guidelines for data analyst roles and responsibilities

A data analyst is responsible for Business Systems Analyst
analyzing source data and for developing source to target mapping documents including data business transformation rules.

They are involved in the following tasks:

Information strategic planning

An enterprise conceptual data movement model should be created as part of the information management strategy. This is part of the business model and shows how data flows into, within, and out of the organization.

Creation of the data movement model requires a senior analyst with extensive systems experience.

Requirements analysis phase

The following activities are required during requirements analysis:
  • A logical data movement model is created. This should be based on the conceptual data movement model created as part of the information management framework;
  • A logical source to target mapping document is created. This should map all source data to the logical data model and should define business data transformation rules and data quality requirements;
  • Data quality analysis is required during requirements analysis and a data profile showing data characteristics is produced.
What qualifications are required for data analyst jobs?

Data analysts need a good knowledge of source system application design, data quality analysis techniques and data mapping experience. They typically have experience as a computer systems analyst or business systems analyst working in a data-warehousing environment.

What are salaries expectations?

Experienced data analysts, with 5-7 years of related experience, should expect to earn $65,000-75,000.

What are contract employee salary expectations?

Contract employees can expect to earn anywhere from $60 to $80 per hour. However, this is the amount that is paid to a staffing company. The amount the contract employee receives will depend upon the fee demanded by the resource-staffing firm.

Can this work be done part time?

This role is required 100% of the time during requirements analysis and much of the work can be performed remote and/or with telecommuting.

It may not be necessary to have an analyst assigned full time during the development and quality assurance testing phases, however, their experience can provide needed help and it is important that they be readily available.

Summary…

Information management projects are data centric and require highly skilled IT specialists to fill data analyst jobs.

A business systems analyst or data analyst plays a key role during the requirements analysis phase and contributes significantly to the overall success of a project.
