Data Warehouse Architect

A data architect, or solution architect, has overallData Warehouse Arhitect responsibility for architecture and design, development, integration testing and data warehousing solution migration to quality assurance testing and production. They are involved in the following data warehouse project phases:

Requirements analysis

The solution architect is responsible for ensuring that requirements are sufficiently clear to commence architecture and design and that acceptance requirements have been clearly defined. This includes:
  • Data requirements;
  • Entity relationship diagram and logical data model;
  • Dimensional data model;
  • Source to target mapping;
  • Data conversion and history load;
  • Data warehouse security;
  • Defining system, or non-functional requirements including
    • Production support; and
    • Service level requirements
Architecture and design

The data architect has overall responsibility for all architecture and design. This includes responsibility for data warehouse design and providing technical direction to data modelers, data analysts, data movement designers, ETL developers and database administrators. This includes:
  • Data warehouse architecture;
  • Data warehouse operations management including:
    • Process architecture; and
    • System processes
  • Physical data base design, including
    • Star schema and data mart design;
    • Snowflake schema schema design
  • Change data design, including slowly changing dimensions;
  • Operational data store design;
  • Defining database development software;
  • Specifying business intelligence architecture;
  • Database normalization;
  • Database partitioning;
  • Data aggregation;
  • Data base management solutions;
  • Data conversion solutions; and
  • Database design documentation.
Construction or build phase

The solution architect is also responsible for the quality assurance of all architecture and design deliverables. This involves reviewing all development  deliverables and certifying that they are complete including:
  • Unit testing; and
  • System testing.
Quality assurance phase

The solution architect is responsible for:
  • Directing integration testing
  • Participating in regression testing
  • Participating in software security testing
  • Load testing and performance testing; and
  • Release testing.
What qualifications are required for data architect jobs?

A data warehouse architect usually requires a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related area and at least 8-10  years of progressively more responsible assignments as a relational database designer, data modeler, and technical designer in a data-warehousing environment.

What are salaries expectations?

Experienced architects, with 8-10 years of related experience, should expect to earn $90,000-140,000.

What are contract employee salary expectations?

Contract employees can expect to earn anywhere from $90 to $125 per hour. However, this is the amount that is paid to a staffing company. The amount the contract employee receives will depend upon the fee demanded by the resource-staffing firm.

Can this work be done part time?

This role is not a good candidate for part time involvement but a large portion of the work can be down remote.
