Need a data warehouse architect and want some practical suggestions about responsibilities, qualifications and salaries?
A data architect, or solution architect, has overall
responsibility
for
architecture and
design, development, integration testing and data warehousing solution
migration to quality assurance testing and production. They are
involved in the following data warehouse project phases:
Requirements
analysis
The solution architect is responsible for ensuring that requirements are
sufficiently clear to commence architecture and design and
that
acceptance requirements have been clearly defined. This includes:
- Data requirements;
- Entity relationship diagram and logical data model;
- Dimensional data model;
- Source to target mapping;
- Data conversion and history load;
- Data warehouse security;
- Defining system, or non-functional requirements including
- Production support; and
- Service level requirements
Architecture
and design
The data architect has overall responsibility for all architecture
and design. This includes responsibility for data warehouse design and
providing technical direction to data modelers, data
analysts, data movement designers, ETL developers and database
administrators. This includes:
- Data warehouse architecture;
- Data warehouse operations management including:
- Process architecture; and
- System processes
- Physical data base design, including
- Star schema and data mart design;
- Snowflake schema schema design
- Change data design, including slowly changing dimensions;
- Operational data store design;
- Defining database development software;
- Specifying business intelligence architecture;

deliverables. This involves reviewing all development deliverables and certifying
that they are complete including:
- Unit testing; and
- System testing.
Quality assurance phase
The solution architect is responsible for:
- Directing integration testing
- Participating in regression testing
- Participating in software security testing
- Load testing and performance testing; and
- Release testing.
What
qualifications are required for data architect jobs?
A
data warehouse architect usually requires a bachelor’s degree in computer science
or related area and at least 8-10 years of progressively more
responsible assignments as a relational database designer, data
modeler, and technical designer in a data-warehousing environment.
What are
salaries expectations?
Experienced architects, with 8-10 years of related experience, should
expect to earn $90,000-140,000.
What are
contract employee salary expectations?
Contract employees can expect to earn anywhere from $90 to $125 per
hour. However, this is the amount that is paid to a staffing
company. The amount the contract employee receives will depend upon the
fee demanded by the resource-staffing firm.
Can this
work be done part time?
This role is not a good candidate for part time involvement but a large portion of the work can be down remote.
Summary…
Information
management projects are data centric and require highly skilled IT
specialists to fill data architect jobs.
A data warehouse architect plays a pivotal role in project planning
and technical design can help ensure rapid delivery.
