What is Data Storage?

The data storage discipline focuses on the management of persistent data stores throughout the organization.  It covers such topics as database selection guidelines, backup & recovery procedures, data retention/archiving policies, and disaster recovery planning.

The following should be addressed in data storage standards and best practices.

Personal schemas are created for individual developers who use their personal schema’s to develop and unit test individual code before moving to system testing in the development environment.
Development environments are sometimes called a system test environment and are used to system test several code components before they are moved to the integration test environment.
Integration test environment is used by the integration test team. Integration testing is designed to ensure that all software performs to specification before it is moved into the quality assurance test environment.
Quality assurance (QA) environment is used by an independent QA team to ensure that the application meets specified requirements. Some form of version control mechanism should control all objects that are migrated to this environment.
User acceptance test environment is sometimes created for use by end users so they can test that the application meets expectations;
Production environment contains all production data. Changes to this environment should only occur after all stakeholders have signed-off on all testing.
Production support (DEV/Test) environment is used by the production support team to fix and test any production issues before moving them into production. It is sometimes used to test new releases of operating system software or ”patches” before moving them into the production environment.
Operational readiness environment, or release test,  is used to test the operational readiness of new application software before it moves into production. Information management solutions frequently use the user acceptance test environment for operational readiness since the primary “user” is the operational support team.

Metadata repositories;
Business intelligence code repositories; and
Configuration management databases
